New Year new start for the Barbarians. Having lost 2 of the opening 8 games in 2012 the Barbarians were already facing an up hill challenge to take there first league crown having been runners up the season before. The mantra was 12 games remain 12 wins needed.
On the 12 January after the Christmas festivities the team lined up against arch rivals The Chiefs. With both teams depleted (Barbarians only fielding 5 skaters) It was going to be a battle of endurance and low scoring. It turned out to be just that with the Barbarians taking a 2-0 away from the game. Eddie Coote showing that he still has the magic between the pipes and recorded his first shut out in his first game!!!!!
Bottesford were the second game of the day and again with a short bench. After a slow start due to fatigue the team really turned the style on a produced some of there best hockey of the season to date. Walking away with a 6-2 win and a 4 point weekend.
Barbarians had 2 fixture mid February against Kingston and York Uni. Having lost to Kingston earlier in the season the Barbarians were aiming to take revenge. It was a tense affair with little between the teams but the Barbarians took a narrow victory 2-1 to make it 3 wins out of 3 in 2013.
A injury to top points score Ben Bradley dampened the spirits with it later been confirmed that he had broken his collar bone after a late and dangerous hit from a Kingston player. This left the squad depleted with 3 major injuries.
Second game of the day saw the Barbarians hit 6 past York on there way to another victory as the spirit of the team drove them forward. Final result 6-2 Barbarians and another 4 point weekend.
As the injury list grew the team reinforced the gaps with David Lloyd and Mark Chambers both players arriving with plenty of energy and focus. They wanting to stamp there claim on regular spots when injured players return.
March was now upon the Barbarians with 4 tricky encounters. First up was Cleckheaton and Salford. Barbarians road there luck and relied on the expertise's of goaltender Eddie Coote who made safe after save from the rapid shooting line ups of both Cleckheaton and Salford. Final scores were 5-3 Barbarians and 6-2 Barbarians. Pushing the team to the top of the division.
A week later saw the team skate out against The Chiefs for the return fixture. Having earlier in the season taken the victory The Chiefs were up for the fight and led 3-1 after some poor defending by the Barbarians. With only minutes to spare the team pulled it back for a 3-3 draw. Thus showing Barbarians battling spirit and a desire to never give up.
Since the turn of the year it was played 8 won 7 drew 1. Title winning form!

League Season Review Part 1
With the dust settling on the 2012 Nationals which saw the disappointed Barbarians dumped out at the Quarter final stage. It was soon time to focus on the next campaign which started with an interesting couple of ties vs Kingston and York Uni in October.
A few players departed over the summer for pasture new, left the door open to recruit a couple of new faces. Richard Hawke a former Norton Cyclone returned after a couple of years away from the sport to bolster the defencive unit. Up front saw the addition of Leigh Thompson who brought vast experience and goals to a team that occasionally struggled in front of goal in 2012.
October arrived with the team in high spirits after a good off season with the new players integrating well within the team. First match was against a York Uni team that on there day could cause problems for any team in the division however the Barbarians put in a fantastic performance to open there campaign with a 12-1. Next up was a fixture against Kingston Panthers. A team that we had played on numerous occasions with mixed results. Having started the game well and playing the better hockey the Barbarians fell to a shocking 4-2 defeat which brought the team down with a bump. After hitting the goal trail it was disappointing to here long standing forward Paul Lycett had taken a knock which resulted in him missing the rest of the league season.
Games against Salford and Cleckheaton followed in late October and saw 2 outstanding performances with a 5-3 win against Salford and 6-3 against a Cleakheaton team that were scoring for fun.
Only 2 games in November saw the Barbarians face 2 very contrasting teams. First up was bottom of the league Vipers. A young inexperienced team at this level which showed as the Barbarians cruised to a 13-0 victory and saw goaltender Barry Weetman gain his first shutout of the season. Northumberland Knights were next up a team that were currently atop of the division. A slow start saw the Barbarians defeated 5-3 and the second time in 6 games. More bad news was to follow when Leigh Thompson relocated and quit the team.
Early December saw the Barbarians return to winning ways with a hard fought victory against local rivals Khaos. A 3-1 score line that flattered a Barbarians team that were under pressure for long periods of time during the tie. Norton Cylones third team were next up. A very youthful team but again inexperienced at senior level saw the Barbarians gain another convincing win to keep them in touch with the leaders at the top of the division.
More disaster struck as No1 netminder Barry Weetman was rushed to hospital with a back injury after an innocuous accident at home. Resulting in him missing the remainder of the season. This lead to Ex Norton Cyclones netminder and current defender for the Barbarians Eddie Coote donning the pads for the remainder of the season.

Frustrated Barbarians leave title door wide open!
Sunday May 5th vs Norton and Khaos
Barbarians final two league games of the season saw them face off against 2 local rivals.
First game against Norton saw a slow start form both teams with very little offencive play. As the period reached the half way point Barbarians started to apply the pressure, with the Walker, Clapham combination coming close on a couple of occasions within a 30 second span. It was however the Bradley and Myers duo that broke the dead lock at 9.38 with a great cross rink pass to open up the Norton defence. 2 minutes later the same duo struck again with Myers scoring his second of the game. Bradley made it 3 with 6 minutes remaining in the first period but Norton were now getting in there stride and made the Barbarians pay for some sloppy defending to make it 3-1 at the interval.
The 2nd period started the same as the first with very little clear cut chances, the Walker and Clapman line increasingly frustrated with missed opportunities. With 5 minutes gone Clapham made it 4-1 with a feed from Oades. Bradley made it 5-1 and the 6-1 in the last quarter of the period.
Final score 6-1.
Stats:- Bradley 3+2, Myers 2+1, Oades 0+2, Clapham 1+0, Hawke 0+1
Barbarians faced up against a Khaos side depleted with only 5 skaters and a goaltender in a must win game to keep pressure on the title chasing Northumberland Knights.
The Barbarians settled down early and soaked up the fast passed attack of the Khaos. It was mid way through the first period that the Barbarians started to excerpt pressure on there opponents with Bradley tipping in a long range shot to put the Barbarians in front. The first period ended with the same score line with plenty of blocked shots by the defensive group of Chambers, Ancliff, Oades, Hawke and Girling.
The second period started with the Barbarians looking very sluggish and seemed to have lost there attacking drive. It wasn't long until the Khaos had equalised and put the Barbarians under sustainable pressure with only five men! Clapham scored a goal against the run of play and made it 2-1 but it wasn't long until the Khaos had equalised and then take the lead 3-2. The luck didn't seem to be on the Barbarians side as they hit the opponents post 3 times. The league title could be seen slipping away with only 5 minutes to go, only a win would do. A powerplay with 4 minutes remaining saw plenty of openings but Khaos goaltender stood up to the test. With 15 seconds remaining the Barbarians equalised with Clapham slotting home from the slot.
Final score 3-3
This has left the team on 33 points with Northumberland 2 points behind with 2 games remaining, all we can do is wait and see what happens. Next BIPHA fixtures will be the National Championships July 27th & 28th

"The guys played really well last weekend but we need to look forward at the 2 up coming games on Sunday. Even though we beat Norton last time 9-2 they have vastly improved since then and will poss a threat with there young fast skaters. Khaos again play a very similar style with fast skaters and proved a handful last time we played them with 3-1 outcome. If we stick to our game plan we should see a positive outcome"
